Collider Triggers End-of-World Fears

On Sept. 10, scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, will switch on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) — a $6 billion particle accelerator that will send beams of protons careening around a 17-mile underground ring, crash them into each other to re-create the immediate aftereffects of the Big Bang, and then monitor the debris in the hope of learning more about the origins and workings of the universe. Next week marks a low-power run of the circuit, and scientists hope to start smashing atoms at full power by the end of the month.
Critics of the LHC say the high-energy experiment might create a mini black hole that could expand to dangerous, Earth-eating proportions. On Aug. 26, Professor Otto Rossler, a German chemist at the Eberhard Karis University of Tubingen, filed a lawsuit against CERN with the European Court of Human Rights that argued, with no understatement, that such a scenario would violate the right to life of European citizens and pose a threat to the rule of law. Last March, two American environmentalists filed a lawsuit in Federal District Court in Honolulu seeking to force the U.S. government to withdraw its participation in the experiment. The lawsuits have in turn spawned several websites, chat rooms and petitions — and led to alarming headlines around the world (Britain's Sun newspaper on Sept. 1: "End of the World Due in 9 Days").

What Will Education Look Like in 2 or 5 or 10 years?

Thomas Frey, founder of the DaVinci Institute in Colorado, has a strong vision of the future in education. It does not resemble what we see today.

The Future
"The pace of change is mandating that we produce a faster, smarter, better grade of human being. Current systems are preventing that from happening. Future education system will be unleashed with the advent of a standardized rapid courseware-builder and a single point global distribution system." Thomas Frey, Executive Director and Senior Futurist at the DaVinci Institute, February 2007.

The Change Is Coming
Thomas Frey, founder of the DaVinci Institute, has a vision. He sees a radical shift beginning in the world of education within two years--which would be 2009. While many are debating vouchers, No Child Left Behind, teacher shortages, grading systems, teacher certification, parental involvement, truancy and dropouts, Frey is thinking out of the box..."Star Trek type" out of the box. Frey believes that in two years private funding will cause disruptive education systems to emerge. And, in 5 years, there will be dramatic changes...dramatic.

Courseware-Builder
This is a $100 word that can be confusing. What is it? Frey believes that technology will drive the future and that items like iTunes and Amazon will determine the vehicle for education. Courseware-Builder will be the software that makes education possible on any conceivable topic. Frey believes that many companies will compete for the market but that one will come out the winner. Then, the consumer will select an education that suits personal needs.
Blast From The Past
Mathematics is a critical component in a successful society. Greek civilization was famous for math--Archimedes, Pythagoras, Euclid, Hipparchus, Posidonius and Ptolemy all furthered math concepts. When the Romans became the dominant force on earth, they did not focus on mathematics. The Romans had the Roman numerals system which made little sense. It prevented the Romans from furthering the mathematics that the Greeks built. Unfortunately, the Romans were not aware that their "system" was holding back progress. Read more...

China puzzles
Are executive-education programmes finding that China is not the land of milk and honey after all? Recently several schools, including the University of Maryland's Smith School of Business and China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), have been reported to be scaling back (in both cases, curtailing their Beijing operations while continuing in Shanghai). There are many signs that other European schools are looking at China through less rosy lenses; watch this space.
But perhaps the foreigners' loss will be locals' gain: demand for domestically-provided executive MBAs in China appears to be rising, with 30 schools now authorised by the Chinese government to offer executive programmes. Meanwhile, China remains the most popular destination for those executive MBA programmes that require a trip abroad.
Want to be a billionaire?
If you want to be a billionaire, pick your university carefully, and pay particular attention to your choice of business school. Research published in May by Forbes reveals that of America's 469 billionaires, 50 are graduates of Harvard College and another 30 were educated at Stanford. In all, 20 universities and colleges account for over half the candidates. While the research looked at graduates of all departments, the business schools produced the big earners—20 of the University of Pennsylvania's 27 billionaire alumni, for example, are Wharton graduates.
Producing super-rich graduates can lead to a virtuous circle, wherein alumni become generous benefactors. The $105m that Phil Knight, Nike's founder, gave to Stanford Business School in 2006, is a particularly dramatic example. But Forbes notes a hopeful sign for the less studious—the rich list includes five who dropped out of New York University. READ MORE>>>

What is global education?

There are many definitions of global education, and the definitions themselves are a source of rich discussion and debate. This definition was written by the World Studies Trust at the beginning of the Global Teacher Project.
*Global Education is not a subject, but a dimension that runs through the curriculum, an extra filter to help children make sense of all the information and opinion the world is throwing at them. It combines methodology - active and experiential discussion based activities, a caring, co-operative and open outlook on the classroom experience, and core concerns- finding out about all the cultures of the UK and of other countries and groups, about the causes of poverty and inequality (here as well as in other countries) and about the environment.
*Global Education is a way of approaching everything we teach and how we teach it. It broadens horizons and encourages exploration of all subjects from a global perspective. It contributes to the whole curriculum and enhances our understanding of the world.
*Global Education stimulates curiosity, motivates learning, and thus contributes to the raising of standards
*Global Education studies different cultures and countries and the issues that face them, and develops an understanding of the impact our actions have on them
*Global Education reflects the global nature of our society and responds to the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the children in the classroom. It recognises the entitlement of those children to receive an education which reflects this diversity
*Global Education recognises the importance of expanding the horizons of children who live in less diverse communities
*Global Education develops skills and attitudes which enable people to take responsibility for their own lives and the world we live in and become active global citizens
*Global Education looks at the ways in which every-day life and experience affect and are affected by the wider worldGlobal education is as much about the relationships within a classroom as it is about relationships between countries... Read more>>>

PC keyboards dirtier than toilet seats

A British computer magazine has discovered our computer keyboards could be bad for our health. “Which? Computing” asked a laboratory to check 30 keyboards in its London office for bacteria. The results were shocking, and disgusting. The lab scientists said five of the keyboards they tested put people at risk of illness. One keyboard contained 150 times more bacteria than health officials say is safe. Its test results showed it was five times dirtier than a toilet seat. The researchers said the germs they found could easily cause symptoms similar to food poisoning, such as diarrhoea and upset stomachs. They named these illnesses “QWERTY tummy,” after the first six letters on the keyboard. The magazine recommended people clean their keyboards regularly to stay healthy and avoid stomach bugs.

The magazine said almost half the people they interviewed cleaned their keyboard less than once a month. Ten percent of people said they never cleaned it. Editor, Sarah Kidner, warned: “Most people don't give much thought to the [dirt] that builds up on their PC….But if you don't clean your computer, you might as well eat your lunch off the toilet.” The main causes of germs and bacteria are crumbs and other small pieces of food that drop onto the keys while workers eat at their desks. Oily fingers from eating potato chips and fries also attract bacteria. Joanne Baxter, a secretary from West London, said she was shocked at this news. “I had no idea that my keyboard could make me ill. I’m afraid to find out what nasty things there are hiding under my keys.” she said.

Alcohol and HIV Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Injection Drug Users

To test the hypothesis that alcohol use and intoxication is associated with sexual behaviors that raise the risk of HIV transmission, the authors analyzed data from 6,341 injection drug users (IDUs) who entered detoxification or methadone maintenance programs in New York City between 1990 and 2004.
In their analysis, the researchers assessed two types of associations: a global association (i.e., the relationship between HIV sexual risk behaviors during the six months preceding the interview and at-risk drinking in that period, defined as more than 14 drinks a week for males and seven drinks a week for females); and an event-specific association (i.e., the relationship between HIV sexual risk behaviors during the most recent sex episode and alcohol intoxication during that episode). Sexual risk behaviors included multiple partners and unprotected sex.
At-risk drinkers were more likely to report multiple partners and unprotected sex with casual partners (both global associations) after adjustments were made for the effects of other variables. Those IDUs who reported that both they and their casual partners were intoxicated during the most recent sex episode were more likely to engage in unprotected sex (an event-specific association).
The researchers also noted two significant interactions. Among the IDUs who did not inject cocaine, moderate drinkers were more likely to report multiple partners. Among IDUs who self- reported as being HIV-positive, when both primary partners were intoxicated during the most recent sexual episode, they were more likely to engage in unprotected sex. "These observations indicate both global and event-specific associations of alcohol and HIV sexual risk behaviors," the authors concluded.

USA/KENYA: Massai Women Reach Milestone

The women of the semi-nomadic Maasai community in Kenya rarely finish grammar school and are often married with children before age 20.On Thursday, three young Maasai bucked the trend: They donned caps and gowns to receive diplomas from Chicago State University. They are among just a few Maasai women to earn college degrees."I never thought that I would see this day," Eunice Sitatian Kaelo, 21, told the audience during the commencement ceremony. She is the sole recipient of the university's prestigious President's Cup, awarded for academic and leadership excellence. "I stand here representing a new legacy for the Maasai community."

The Global Education Industry

Abstract: The first edition of this pioneering book produced surprising conclusions from research around the world into the extent of private education. Drawing on examples from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Peru, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and other countries, Professor Tooley gave a snapshot of private education that was unknown to many readers; contrary to expectations, the private education sector was large in the countries studied, was innovative, and was not the exclusive domain of the wealthy. On the contrary, he found that the private sector often provided social responsibility, subsidised places and student loan schemes. Tooley identifies the factors that impede or facilitate the development of the private education sector in various countries, focusing on the regulatory regimes that may impinge upon private education. This led him to conclude with a proposal for the role of for-profit education enterprises in promoting equitable development. In this second edition, Professor Tooley contributes a new preface which shows how his work has developed and extended into other countries. In particular, he provides a fascinating account of how private education is flourishing in China.

Smoking Must Be Prohibited Everywhere Possible !

Recently people have noticed the serious and harmful effects of smoking on the society. Especially pupils are in danger since there is no limitation to stop this bad habit. Although the governments, mostly in developed countries, have taken some decision in order to reduce the number of the newcomers of smoking such as to prohibit smoking in public areas, these are not very effective tools to decrease the amount of the tobacco which is produced and used at the same time. The struggle against smoking should start in an early age and the communities must be very serious on this. The problem is big enough, so I will make a researchment and add it to my blog later.
