A telecommunication satellite successfully launched

Turksat 3A communication satellite built by Thales Alenia Space was successfully launched on June, 12 by an Ariane 5 ECA from the Kourou site, in French Guiana.
Turksat 3A satellite will enable Turksat to provide telecommunication services as well as direct TV broadcasting services across a wider area than existing satellites covering Turkey, Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia. With the help of its switchable transponders, Turksat 3A will act as a bridge between Europe and Asia. Turksat 3A's Turkey coverage has been specially designed to provide very efficient gain for broadband applications like VSAT services giving customers low-cost, up-link opportunities.
Based on Thales Alenia Space Spacebus 4000B2, Turksat 3A will be fitted with 24 Ku-band transponders with beginning of life power of about 8 kW. Positioned at 42°E, Turksat 3A will join the four other satellites manufactured by Thales Alenia Space for Turkey over the past 10 years*.

What is global education?

There are many definitions of global education, and the definitions themselves are a source of rich discussion and debate. This definition was written by the World Studies Trust at the beginning of the Global Teacher Project.
*Global Education is not a subject, but a dimension that runs through the curriculum, an extra filter to help children make sense of all the information and opinion the world is throwing at them. It combines methodology - active and experiential discussion based activities, a caring, co-operative and open outlook on the classroom experience, and core concerns- finding out about all the cultures of the UK and of other countries and groups, about the causes of poverty and inequality (here as well as in other countries) and about the environment.

*Global Education is a way of approaching everything we teach and how we teach it. It broadens horizons and encourages exploration of all subjects from a global perspective. It contributes to the whole curriculum and enhances our understanding of the world.
*Global Education stimulates curiosity, motivates learning, and thus contributes to the raising of standards
*Global Education studies different cultures and countries and the issues that face them, and develops an understanding of the impact our actions have on them

PC keyboards dirtier than toilet seats

A British computer magazine has discovered our computer keyboards could be bad for our health. “Which? Computing” asked a laboratory to check 30 keyboards in its London office for bacteria. The results were shocking, and disgusting. The lab scientists said five of the keyboards they tested put people at risk of illness. One keyboard contained 150 times more bacteria than health officials say is safe. Its test results showed it was five times dirtier than a toilet seat. The researchers said the germs they found could easily cause symptoms similar to food poisoning, such as diarrhoea and upset stomachs. They named these illnesses “QWERTY tummy,” after the first six letters on the keyboard. The magazine recommended people clean their keyboards regularly to stay healthy and avoid stomach bugs.

The magazine said almost half the people they interviewed cleaned their keyboard less than once a month. Ten percent of people said they never cleaned it. Editor, Sarah Kidner, warned: “Most people don't give much thought to the [dirt] that builds up on their PC….But if you don't clean your computer, you might as well eat your lunch off the toilet.” The main causes of germs and bacteria are crumbs and other small pieces of food that drop onto the keys while workers eat at their desks. Oily fingers from eating potato chips and fries also attract bacteria. Joanne Baxter, a secretary from West London, said she was shocked at this news. “I had no idea that my keyboard could make me ill. I’m afraid to find out what nasty things there are hiding under my keys.” she said.

Alcohol and HIV Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Injection Drug Users

To test the hypothesis that alcohol use and intoxication is associated with sexual behaviors that raise the risk of HIV transmission, the authors analyzed data from 6,341 injection drug users (IDUs) who entered detoxification or methadone maintenance programs in New York City between 1990 and 2004.
In their analysis, the researchers assessed two types of associations: a global association (i.e., the relationship between HIV sexual risk behaviors during the six months preceding the interview and at-risk drinking in that period, defined as more than 14 drinks a week for males and seven drinks a week for females); and an event-specific association (i.e., the relationship between HIV sexual risk behaviors during the most recent sex episode and alcohol intoxication during that episode). Sexual risk behaviors included multiple partners and unprotected sex.
At-risk drinkers were more likely to report multiple partners and unprotected sex with casual partners (both global associations) after adjustments were made for the effects of other variables. Those IDUs who reported that both they and their casual partners were intoxicated during the most recent sex episode were more likely to engage in unprotected sex (an event-specific association).
The researchers also noted two significant interactions. Among the IDUs who did not inject cocaine, moderate drinkers were more likely to report multiple partners. Among IDUs who self- reported as being HIV-positive, when both primary partners were intoxicated during the most recent sexual episode, they were more likely to engage in unprotected sex. "These observations indicate both global and event-specific associations of alcohol and HIV sexual risk behaviors," the authors concluded.
